What are dental veneers?

A veneer improves the look and function of a tooth by covering the visible, front surface with a custom-made, tooth-colored porcelain overlay. The dentist can apply a porcelain veneer in a single office visit. With proper care and optimal oral hygiene, a veneer can last about five to 10 years.

When can veneers treat?

A veneer is often used for a tooth which is:

  • Discolored or stained
  • Worn down, chipped, or broken
  • Misaligned, uneven, or abnormally shaped

It can also be used to fill the gaps between teeth which are otherwise healthy.

What happens during the procedure?

After a thorough exam of the patient’s teeth, gums, and bone structure, the dentist will go over treatment options with each patient and answer any questions. If dental veneers are a good choice, the dentist will:

  • Apply a local anesthetic to the targeted area of the person’s mouth
  • Then, the dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from the front of the tooth to make room for the veneer
  • 3D imaging which is used to design and create impressions and the veneer will be made to these specifications
  • The tooth’s front surface will be cleaned, and the veneer is place adhered to it
  • Lastly, a special hand-held light is used to harden the veneer

Which is Better, Veneers or Cosmetic Bonding?

Both cosmetic bonding and veneers have their advantages. Cosmetic bonding options are traditionally performed in one dental appointment and are less costly. However, the resins are not a resilient as the porcelain used in veneers. This makes cosmetic bonding more vulnerable to damage. Patients frequently chose veneers because they are very natural-looking and durable. To determine what is best for you, contact the office. The dentist will go over the options with you as well as the benefits of each form of treatment and together you will decide which option is the right one for your unique needs.
