Can veneers treat gaps?

A veneer placed on top of the teeth can correct a natural gap or one which is the result of an injury to a beautiful smile. Veneers are a very popular solution because they are very natural looking. Veneers are thin, custom-made devices made of porcelain, designed to cover the front surface of teeth. To prepare the teeth for veneers, the dentist will create an impression of the tooth. This is sent to a dental lab where the veneer is made. Then, a small amount of the tooth’s enamel is shaved down to make room for the veneer. When the veneer(s) is placed, it will adhere in a way to effectively close the gap. Additionally, though veneers are stain resistant, the doctor may recommend that patients avoid coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco.

What are dental implants?

If patients have missing teeth, it is important to replace them. Without all their teeth, chewing and eating can cause bite problems and even pain. When teeth are missing, the teeth can shift, and bone tissue in the jaw can start to deteriorate. Implants are a very good way to replace missing teeth because the implant post is made from biocompatible titanium. This metal fuses naturally with the jaw. The head, or visible tooth portion, is made from porcelain which looks just like a natural tooth. The implant is made of these two parts which mimic a tooth’s root and crown. Once the implant post is in place, the porcelain crown is attached to the post with an abutment. Implants can also be used to anchor dentures, particularly lower dentures which tend to shift when a person talks or chews. Additionally, for patients with removable partial dentures, implants can replace missing teeth, so their smile is more natural looking.
